Background Checks

I wonder whether we as a individual understand importance of background checks.Though corporates have been getting the employee background checks done for their staff for a long time but i am yet to see this being practiced by individuals.In our homes maids get access to all the private areas,our drivers take our family members around the town but do we ever think about getting their background check done?I wonder whether it is the ignorance or lack of resources or cost which prohibits people from getting the background check done for their domestic help.
